In the middle of the Mediterranean, a stone’s throw away from Sardinia, and closer to Italy no matter what bird is making the trip; it’s true - Corsica is French! And it's the birthplace of Napoleon. Apparently they have their own separatist movement as well … but those are all stories for another time.

Today’s little fable revolves around this delicious Rosé from Domaine Vetriccie. And you guessed it, Vetriccie is on Corisca in the little hamlet of Aghione. Founded in 1966, it’s right in the heartland of Corsica, right next to the mountains which give the wine a high-altitude freshness, and the sea, which draws in its salty minerality. Daniel Barcelo is the current scion of the founding family, and he chose the name of this wine to reflect his land - Vetriccie is a type of indigenous withe (a small pliable plant that looks like wicker) and Ile de Beaute is “that of beauty”. (Hang on, this is gonna get a little confusing but the final taste is worth it!) The main grape in this wine is Nielluccio, which you’ve probably never heard of, but it’s the Corsican way of saying Sangiovese, which you probably have heard of. Sangiovese brings the flavors of ripe cranberries, strawberries, and a bit of red-currant crunch and zesty liveliness to the wine.

The next major grape is Sciaccerello, which once upon a time played a major role in Tuscan winemaking, under the moniker Mammolo. Here, it brings a beautiful violet perfume to the wine, lifting up the fruit character from the Nielluccio and gracefully accenting it. Grenache, important and almost dominant in all French Roses, came to Corsica only recently. Originally, Corsicans probably used the high-yielding varieties of Cinsault or Carignan in their blends. But by the 1960s, Grenache was found to be a much higher-quality blending partner, offering a sense of rounded fruit character with a bit of richness.

The end result is a gorgeous combination of freshness, vivid fruit character, a dusting of sea spray - pure and delicious as a cocktail but simply magical with all Mediterranean cuisines, be they French or Italian.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_8cd40c5c-fc44-43e6-b3b7-f4643a3ce621.png?v=1631233664
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_1d99acf7-38b7-4044-a0af-17fc6dbaedb7.png?v=1631233696
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_92a29c72-b946-4a37-a89c-56c75b023980.png?v=1631233730
draft-a14
La Spinetta Il Rose di Casanova 2025

Winery notes:

Irresistible, delicate, fresh. Burgundy stares at itself in the mirror. Bordeaux keeps receipts. But the Loire? The Loire packs a baguette, disappears into the fog and somehow returns with the most refreshing bottle you’ve tasted all year.

Domaine Filliatreau’s 2021 Château Fouquet Saumur Rouge is exactly that sort of wine. This is Cabernet Franc at its most buoyant: energetic, savory and just wild enough around the edges to feel deliciously alive. Not the stern, graphite-heavy Franc that lectures you about structure. This one wants to dance barefoot in the kitchen while the roasted chicken rests.

The Filliatreau family has worked the chalky soils of Saumur for generations, farming organically and treating Cabernet Franc less like a grape to tame and more like a grape to listen to. The vineyards sit atop the tuffeau limestone that defines great Saumur—that pale, porous chalk that seems to inject wines with both levity and electric snap. You taste it immediately here. The fruit feels suspended in air.

2021 was a cooler vintage in the Loire, which turns out to be wonderful news for wines like this. Instead of excess weight or jamminess, Château Fouquet arrives all bright-eyed and nimble: tart raspberry, crushed cranberry, red currant, violets, and the sort of herbal freshness that makes you think of snapping green stems in a garden after the rain. Then come classic Franc notes—pencil shavings, damp earth, black tea, a little cracked pepper—all woven together with remarkable ease.

But what makes this bottle so lovable is its texture. There’s this gentle chalky grip beneath the juicy fruit, like biting into a just-ripe plum while standing in a limestone cellar. The wine feels playful but not simple, serious but never self-important. You can chill it slightly and drink it with charcuterie, roast salmon, mushroom tart, cassoulet, burgers or, frankly, an irresponsible amount of pâté and cornichons.

There’s also something deeply French about it in the best possible way. A serious, old-vine Régnié that leans into structure and soil over overt charm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_89a8f903-a78e-4426-bb36-f9088f4651ec.png?v=1631296135
b31
La Varenne Chinon Tradition

La Varenne Chinon Tradition opens with a cooler, more woodland register — tart cranberry and red currant giving way to dried violets, bay leaf, and a faint whiff of pencil shavings. That image may sound like I juice too much kale, so I’ll paint you a better picture.

You’re in a garden on an idyllic, cool spring day, tending to the early baby lettuces, maybe eating a few of their young leaves now and again. Your fingers set the straw, the compost and the garden limestone. Cool water from the iron faucet washes over the palms of your hands. You eagerly begin to imagine the summer bounty you hope Mother Nature provides for you. This feeling of anticipating summer ― of cherishing and cultivating nature, of daydreaming of warmer weather, of whiling away a vernal weekend afternoon with fresh food, good wine and great friends ― that feeling of the good, green earth is what these wines are.

I allocated myself just one bottle each of Janvier’s Jasnières and Cuvée Silex this season, and I made the most of both of them. Fresh Wisconsin trout with crushed green tomatoes and roasted chèvre and chives, along with two garlic toasts ― one with crushed peas, the other with roasted Brie, spring red onions and prosciutto. And finally, squash blossoms stuffed with more chèvre, fried and served with slivered garlic scapes. But because I only got one bottle of these wines, I didn’t share either of them or any of this. But if you buy some of Janvier’s wines, I’m more than happy to recreate this experience!

You can tell by now I really like these wines.

Pascal Janvier is a butcher-turned-winemaker who cultivates Chenin Blanc and Pineau d’Aunis in the Loir Valley, and his wines are long-established fixtures of the Kermit Lynch import portfolio. Kermit says that the wines are best after aging seven to 10 years, and I agree with him. Though that didn’t stop me from drinking my two-bottle allocation of the new vintage straightaway. The Jasnières is planted on clay and limestone soils and has stronger fruit notes. The Cuvée Silex is planted on flint and is smokier.

Pascal’s wines are beautiful and unique. But 2021 brought small yields to the Loir as well as the Loire, and the State of Wisconsin, which is to say Waterford Wine, received tiny quantities of Janvier’s beauties.
