If you’re willing to explore, your palate will be richly rewarded. And if you’re very fortunate, you won’t have to pay a lot for the experience. Such is the case with the wines at Domaine Claudie Jobard in Pommard.

Claudie is the eighth generation of the family to have worked the domaine’s vines. Laurence Jobard is Claudie’s mother and a rather famous woman in Burgundy. She was the first female winemaker at Domaine Drouhin, a distinction that made her the first female winemaker at any large and important Burgundy house. She was also the first female Burgundy winemaker to garner enthusiastic and extensive praise for the wines she made.

And then there’s Claudie’s dad, Roger Jobard. Nursery work in Burgundy is considered “woman’s work because,” says Claudie, “men are too rough.” But Roger is a nursery owner and one of the region’s best. Name a top Burgundy domaine and Roger’s been there planting vines. Growing up, Claudie helped her dad graft, mend and plant over 100,000 different vines. But after high school, Claudie wanted out of Burgundy and away from wine. As Claudie told my tasting group, “After Mom in Burgundy wines, and Dad in Burgundy vines, there wasn’t much room for me to become Claudie.”

This is an Old World French family, and leaving an Old World French family is a big deal. Between her grandma and her parents, the pressure on Claudie to return and work the vines of the domaine steadily intensified. Mom was chosen to apply the big guns. She asked Claudie to throw Grandma a birthday party featuring a vertical tasting of 60 vintages from her favorite vineyard, Pommard Premier Cru Les Vaumuriens. For Claudie, this was the turning point. The vertical was, she says, “just magical. Vintage after vintage, it so strongly revealed the identity of the vineyard that the hand of winemaker couldn’t be seen.” The experience encapsulates the French idea of terroir — an idea so powerful to all wine lovers. “It was like waking up one morning to discover just how beautiful the world is,” Claudie said, acknowledging that her mom taught her the love of winemaking.

Named after Claudie’s grandma, the “Milliane” is not only made from 100% Pommard fruit, its fruit also comes from 100% vieilles vignes, or old vines. Its nose offers aromas of pure, fresh raspberries, as if they were just picked while strolling in the French countryside. The fruit is framed by notes of spice and a lively acidity. All of the old vines for the wine come from the lower slope of Pommard, where the subsoil changes from clay to limestone. Clay typically gives Pommards their depth and succulence and their robust tannins. In this wine, clay delivers the fascinating combination of Pommard’s luscious, spicy fruit with a smooth tannic structure. It’s intellectually woven and hedonistically satisfying.

Burgundy treasure awaits in this beautifully crafted bottle!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_a5e29310-e97a-4f78-938c-82f3b32018dd.png?v=1631552326
domaine-lafouge-bourgogne-pinot-noir-cote-dor
Domaine Lafouge Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cote d'Or

There is a good reason this wine with a humble title tastes amazingly great. This is spectacular Pinot Noir, a bit hidden behind its own label. What it means for us is some great drinking from a hidden gem in Burgundy.

While Burgundy produces some of the world’s greatest wines, it can be confusing and it certainly is complex. But for all its complexity, it sums down to one golden rule – the place matters most. And that rule comes with a simple corollary – the more specific the place, the higher the quality of wine.

Now, just when we’ve simplified all down for you into specific place = greatest quality, the Burgundians have gone and changed the rules – they’ve added another place. They carved out a new region inside an old one. Here’s how it works:

While we think of Burgundy as being tiny, if you include it all from Beaujolais to Chablis, it actually gets much bigger. And for many producers (leaving them unnamed) who are making cheap Burgundy, they exploit this fact by labeling their wines “Bourgogne Pinot Noir.” This Pinot Noir can come from almost anywhere – Beaujolais, Maconnais, heck, even the hinterland beyond the Haut Cotes. This type of “Bourgogne” is truly generic and works great if you’re a big guy producing bulk Burgundy.

Now about 10 years ago, small producers started to complain. The complaint is easy to understand. If you’re a small farmer entirely based in the high-rent district of the Cote d’Or, your Pinot ends up being shelved with all the bulk stuff, even though it doesn’t taste like the bulk stuff and certainly isn’t made like it either. What small producers asked for, and got, was a carved out, new appellation – Bourgogne Cote d’Or. Simply put, Pinot Noir that is entirely from that high-rent district of Grand Crus called the Golden Slope (or Cote d’Or in French).

Lafouge is one such producer. His Pinot come entirely from the Premier Crus of the village of Auxey Duresses, and this wine is gobsmackingly delicious Pinot Noir:

The nose opens with the heaven-sent aromas of Pinot Noir: cola, mulled black cherries, cassis, woodsmoke, scone spices, plums, and rose petals all waft from the glass in this ever-changing, multifaceted wine. The palate is full and rounded yet with great lift and energy. To me it is the perfect expression of Bourgogne Pinot Noir – all the ripe mid-palate fruit that you need for sheer hedonistic enjoyment, yet with the seamless line of vibrancy that keeps one coming back for more. The finish is supple, velvety and smooth. It drinks great now (I’m already on my fifth bottle!), yet I am positive that this one can go for a decade or more in your cellar. Or as none other than Robert Parker published, “These wines age beautifully, I can personally testify, having enjoyed a lovely 1969 last summer.”

While Bob and I don’t often agree on wines, on this producer, we do agree. Way back yonder in 2005, Burgundy wasn’t really on anyone’s radar except for a very few select collectors. The wines were known to be supremely variable, low-rated compared with Bordeaux or Napa, and hard to get. The wines were never cheap, but looking back, compared to where they are now, they were indeed inexpensive. And so begins our yarn of the day:

It’s cliche to say that in Burgundy a rising tide raised all the ships, and further, it’s not quite true - some of the “ships” got rocket-fueled and blasted their prices through the atmosphere and, in some cases, out of the solar system. Good for those farmers, they are now making bank. But, by and large, the trickle-down has eventually made it to the least wealthy farmers in Burgundy, and those are usually co-operatives. With the rise in Burgundy’s wine prices, even at this lowest end of the scale, farmers have been able to reinvest in their vineyards, bring modern winemaking to the fore, and draw out even more amazing wines then they had been making in the past.

So it is with Domaine des Terres Gentilles - The Domaine of the Kind Land. While I haven’t been to this place nor met with the group of farmers behind it, I quite appreciate that the name is pretty in a gentle way, which echoes the wine itself.

Here, with their "La Cadole" bottling, the nose jumps with juicy raspberry freshness, bouncing around the room like a prancing kitten. The palate bubbles with Bing cherries, fresh strawberries and pomegranates. It’s frisky and exuberant, chock-full of minerality and energy. Named after the ancient stone huts “Cadole” that were farmer shelters during inclement weather in the vineyard, this also reflects the soil as well - stony and mineral, and being grown in this soil brings an extra depth and richness to the wine.

One thing to note - the coming vintages of Burgundy’s wines are very “short”, meaning harvests were down considerably. Annoyingly, we will all see prices rise as well as wines become harder to get. So that was why when I was told the price of this wine, I was quite astounded. It’s worth its regular price, but at the sale price, it's a steal. We got a little stash of it, don’t miss it!

Syriana
Default
