Simply nothing pairs better with sunshine and fresh air than rosé. I can’t think of a reason to not start drinking it right now. And with rosé, why not head straight for one of the best – Bandol.

Bandol sits in the cradle of southern France, directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Among these sunbathed hills, the thick-skinned Mourvedre grape (and its familial grape partners) basks in the heat while enjoying the cool sea breeze of these azure waters – it’s essentially, the ultimate in sunbathing. The result of this combination of climate and grape is one of the world’s great wine treasures, Bandol Rosé.

It probably goes without saying that this rosé is dry, even though it is the color of a blush. It is certainly worth saying that what is tucked inside these bottles is just insanely delicious – full of flavor and powerfully rich, almost like a red wine; yet also crisp and dry, like a white. And we have one of the best Bandols – Chateau Salettes.

Seventeen generations of Boyers have attended the gorgeous hillside estate of Chateau Salettes. And while that history is long, they also haven’t been resting on their laurels. Over the past decade they took on an ambitious modernization of the winery, insuring that when the 18th generation is ready to take over, this Bandol estate will be one of the leading lights of the area. In this bottling, that shows:

Aromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, sea spray, brine and whispers of savory herbs abound from the glass upon the first pour. The palate is bold – again, this rose drinks like a red wine but you chill it like a white – and there is a broad and stratified depth here, a heft of bountiful luxuriance but also a clean, crisp and bright quality. Imagine yourself on a beach grilling lobster with tarragon butter, or mahi mahi with a coriander fennel crust; after just having surfed the perfect barrel – that’s what this wine is speaking about, a place of sunshine, sparkling fun, and simple culinary extravagance.

For those of you who know Bandol Rosé, you know of what I speak – but you also know there is a price to be paid. Bandol rosé is dearly loved and prized, and the best of the best are often $40 or more a bottle. In the grand scheme of “the best” in wine that is still cheap – ponder the price of Tete de Cru Champagne, white Burgundy, or the top Napa Cabernet.

Yet here is one of the best, and because we bought it as direct as possible, we have it at an amazing price. Now is a great time to be drinking Rosé. The champaignoise believe they have a monopoly on great bubbly. They don’t. What they have is a monopoly on the image of great bubbly. But a short hop, skip and jump across France reveals just how tasty “other sparklers” can be. Allow me to introduce you to Kraemer Blanc de Blancs Brut Vin Mousseux.

That's a big name, so let me unpack it a little bit. This sparkling wine (vin mousseux) is made from Chardonnay grapes (blancs) in the driest style (brut). Kraemer pays homage to the German influence in Champagne (Krug, Moet, Mumm...), while also being an affectionate name for a shopkeeper. So this bubbly charmer from the Loire Valley should be on your short list for great summer drinking. Really, this mousseaux makes any occasion feel like a celebration:

Kraemer Blanc de Blancs Brut Vin Mousseux opens with notes of green apples and fresh-baked croissants. Champaignoise will claim that no “mere” sparkler can attain the toasty richness of Champagne, yet here it is! Smelling of freshly toasted pain de campagne spread with sweet butter and honey, Kraemer is sure to please any Champagne lover. The mousse is supple, lending touches of honeysuckle and jasmine to a fresh, lively finish. It’s delightful in every way.

Yes, you can drink great sparkling wine every day. In the middle of the Mediterranean, a stone’s throw away from Sardinia, and closer to Italy no matter what bird is making the trip; it’s true - Corsica is French! And it's the birthplace of Napoleon. And you guessed it, Vetriccie is on Corisca in the little hamlet of Aghione. Founded in 1966, it’s right in the heartland of Corsica, right next to the mountains which give the wine a high-altitude freshness, and the sea, which draws in its salty minerality. Daniel Barcelo is the current scion of the founding family, and he chose the name of this wine to reflect his land - Vetriccie is a type of indigenous withe (a small pliable plant that looks like wicker) and Ile de Beaute is “that of beauty”. Here, it brings a beautiful violet perfume to the wine, lifting up the fruit character from the Nielluccio and gracefully accenting it. Grenache, important and almost dominant in all French Roses, came to Corsica only recently. Originally, Corsicans probably used the high-yielding varieties of Cinsault or Carignan in their blends. Burgundy stares at itself in the mirror. Bordeaux keeps receipts. But the Loire? The Loire packs a baguette, disappears into the fog and somehow returns with the most refreshing bottle you’ve tasted all year.

Domaine Filliatreau’s 2021 Château Fouquet Saumur Rouge is exactly that sort of wine. This is Cabernet Franc at its most buoyant: energetic, savory and just wild enough around the edges to feel deliciously alive. Not the stern, graphite-heavy Franc that lectures you about structure. This one wants to dance barefoot in the kitchen while the roasted chicken rests.

The Filliatreau family has worked the chalky soils of Saumur for generations, farming organically and treating Cabernet Franc less like a grape to tame and more like a grape to listen to. The vineyards sit atop the tuffeau limestone that defines great Saumur—that pale, porous chalk that seems to inject wines with both levity and electric snap. You taste it immediately here. The fruit feels suspended in air.

2021 was a cooler vintage in the Loire, which turns out to be wonderful news for wines like this. Instead of excess weight or jamminess, Château Fouquet arrives all bright-eyed and nimble: tart raspberry, crushed cranberry, red currant, violets, and the sort of herbal freshness that makes you think of snapping green stems in a garden after the rain. Then come classic Franc notes—pencil shavings, damp earth, black tea, a little cracked pepper—all woven together with remarkable ease.

But what makes this bottle so lovable is its texture. There’s this gentle chalky grip beneath the juicy fruit, like biting into a just-ripe plum while standing in a limestone cellar. The wine feels playful but not simple, serious but never self-important. You can chill it slightly and drink it with charcuterie, roast salmon, mushroom tart, cassoulet, burgers or, frankly, an irresponsible amount of pâté and cornichons.

There’s also something deeply French about it in the best possible way. Fresh Wisconsin trout with crushed green tomatoes and roasted chèvre and chives, along with two garlic toasts ― one with crushed peas, the other with roasted Brie, spring red onions and prosciutto. And finally, squash blossoms stuffed with more chèvre, fried and served with slivered garlic scapes. But because I only got one bottle of these wines, I didn’t share either of them or any of this. But it should be, and I’m here to pleasantly, and quickly, introduce you to all of them.

Arnauld Lambert is a young winemaker in the Loire Valley, with his hometown being Saumur Champigny. Coming to winemaking at a young age, he also arrived with no preconceived notions, which is important for his part of the world. Most Saumur wines are made in the old, co-operative style, emphasizing bulk production instead of quality of fruit. Most are also grown using a high input of chemicals as well.

But Lambert changed all of that. First he shifted to organics, and he is now shifting to biodynamics. Instead of large bulk parcels, he is vinifying small cuvees focused on obtaining the pure expression of the terroir. Hence this one being named “red earth”, after that soil on which it is planted. As Bettane & Desseauve (the top French wine magazine) noted of Lambert: “[He is] one of the most talented winemakers in the Loire… one of Top 100 Producers of France.”

In Saumur, the main red grape variety is Cabernet Franc. And with stating that, I would like to give a bit of a disclaimer, with a silver lining. Loire Cabernet Franc, when farmed in bulk, often is not to most Americans’ flavor profile liking. If you were studying for a Master Somm exam, the kindest way you might summarize it is “underripe blueberry.”

But that’s not this wine. Here, due to careful vineyard practices and meticulous work in the winery, Lambert’s Saumur Franc expresses a gorgeous purity of red raspberry fruit and blueberry fruit on the nose and palate. The fruit expression is so dynamic and engaging, it is absolutely sure to please. But this is still the Loire (not Napa), and the fruit character is one of vivid freshness, as opposed to, say, Pritchard Hill Franc’s girthy power. The wine is lean with the sense of being utterly refreshing, giving the palate and finish definition in detail – a master work of deliciousness wrapped in a delightfully unassuming presentation.

Here, front and center, is the new-wave of Loire Cabernet Franc, the reason that sommeliers everywhere are bragging about being able to glass pour Lambert’s wines. She was also the first female Burgundy winemaker to garner enthusiastic and extensive praise for the wines she made.

And then there’s Claudie’s dad, Roger Jobard. Nursery work in Burgundy is considered “woman’s work because,” says Claudie, “men are too rough.” But Roger is a nursery owner and one of the region’s best. Name a top Burgundy domaine and Roger’s been there planting vines. Growing up, Claudie helped her dad graft, mend and plant over 100,000 different vines. But after high school, Claudie wanted out of Burgundy and away from wine. As Claudie told my tasting group, “After Mom in Burgundy wines, and Dad in Burgundy vines, there wasn’t much room for me to become Claudie.”

This is an Old World French family, and leaving an Old World French family is a big deal. Between her grandma and her parents, the pressure on Claudie to return and work the vines of the domaine steadily intensified. Mom was chosen to apply the big guns. She asked Claudie to throw Grandma a birthday party featuring a vertical tasting of 60 vintages from her favorite vineyard, Pommard Premier Cru Les Vaumuriens. For Claudie, this was the turning point. The vertical was, she says, “just magical. Vintage after vintage, it so strongly revealed the identity of the vineyard that the hand of winemaker couldn’t be seen.” The experience encapsulates the French idea of terroir — an idea so powerful to all wine lovers. “It was like waking up one morning to discover just how beautiful the world is,” Claudie said, acknowledging that her mom taught her the love of winemaking.

Named after Claudie’s grandma, the “Milliane” is not only made from 100% Pommard fruit, its fruit also comes from 100% vieilles vignes, or old vines. Its nose offers aromas of pure, fresh raspberries, as if they were just picked while strolling in the French countryside. The fruit is framed by notes of spice and a lively acidity. All of the old vines for the wine come from the lower slope of Pommard, where the subsoil changes from clay to limestone. Clay typically gives Pommards their depth and succulence and their robust tannins. In this wine, clay delivers the fascinating combination of Pommard’s luscious, spicy fruit with a smooth tannic structure. It’s intellectually woven and hedonistically satisfying.

Burgundy treasure awaits in this beautifully crafted bottle!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_a5e29310-e97a-4f78-938c-82f3b32018dd.png?v=1631552326
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0579/2805/7022/products/image_1e52d032-c35b-4ff4-ae64-6987cebdae28.png?v=1631554852
c71
Domaine Stephane Magnien Morey Saint Denis Premier Cru Les Faconnieres

Deeply composed and quietly authoritative, this opens with red plum, dark cherry, and dried raspberry, layered with rose stem, forest floor, and a cool, iron-tinged minerality typical of Morey’s firmer soils.
