And with rosé, why not head straight for one of the best – Bandol.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eBandol sits in the cradle of southern France, directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Among these sunbathed hills, the thick-skinned Mourvedre grape (and its familial grape partners) basks in the heat while enjoying the cool sea breeze of these azure waters – it’s essentially, the ultimate in sunbathing. The result of this combination of climate and grape is one of the world’s great wine treasures, Bandol Rosé.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eIt probably goes without saying that this rosé is dry, even though it is the color of a blush. It is certainly worth saying that what is tucked inside these bottles is just insanely delicious – full of flavor and powerfully rich, almost like a red wine; yet also crisp and dry, like a white. And we have one of the best Bandols – Chateau Salettes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eSeventeen generations of Boyers have attended the gorgeous hillside estate of Chateau Salettes. And while that history is long, they also haven’t been resting on their laurels. Over the past decade they took on an ambitious modernization of the winery, insuring that when the 18th generation is ready to take over, this Bandol estate will be one of the leading lights of the area. In this bottling, that shows: \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eAromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, sea spray, brine and whispers of savory herbs abound from the glass upon the first pour. The palate is bold – again, this rose drinks like a red wine but you chill it like a white – and there is a broad and stratified depth here, a heft of bountiful luxuriance but also a clean, crisp and bright quality. Imagine yourself on a beach grilling lobster with tarragon butter, or mahi mahi with a coriander fennel crust; after just having surfed the perfect barrel – that’s what this wine is speaking about, a place of sunshine, sparkling fun, and simple culinary extravagance. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eFor those of you who know Bandol Rosé, you know of what I speak – but you also know there is a price to be paid. Bandol rosé is dearly loved and prized, and the best of the best are often $40 or more a bottle. In the grand scheme of “the best” in wine that is still cheap – ponder the price of Tete de Cru Champagne, white Burgundy, or the top Napa Cabernet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eYet here is one of the best, and because we bought it as direct as possible, we have it at an amazing price. Now is a great time to be drinking Rosé. In the middle of the Mediterranean, a stone’s throw away from Sardinia, and closer to Italy no matter what bird is making the trip; it’s true - Corsica is French! And it's the birthplace of Napoleon. Apparently they have their own separatist movement as well … but those are all stories for another time. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eToday’s little fable revolves around this delicious Rosé from Domaine Vetriccie. And you guessed it, Vetriccie is on Corisca in the little hamlet of Aghione. Founded in 1966, it’s right in the heartland of Corsica, right next to the mountains which give the wine a high-altitude freshness, and the sea, which draws in its salty minerality. Daniel Barcelo is the current scion of the founding family, and he chose the name of this wine to reflect his land - Vetriccie is a type of indigenous withe (a small pliable plant that looks like wicker) and Ile de Beaute is “that of beauty”. And this wine, truly is a beauty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHere, drinking the wine itself, you get the beautiful cross-cultural associations between Italy and France. (Hang on, this is gonna get a little confusing but the final taste is worth it!) The main grape in this wine is Nielluccio, which you’ve probably never heard of, but it’s the Corsican way of saying Sangiovese, which you probably \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ehave\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e heard of. Sangiovese brings the flavors of ripe cranberries, strawberries, and a bit of red-currant crunch and zesty liveliness to the wine.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe next major grape is Sciaccerello, which once upon a time played a major role in Tuscan winemaking, under the moniker Mammolo. Here, it brings a beautiful violet perfume to the wine, lifting up the fruit character from the Nielluccio and gracefully accenting it. Grenache, important and almost dominant in all French Roses, came to Corsica only recently. Originally, Corsicans probably used the high-yielding varieties of Cinsault or Carignan in their blends. Second, this winery was founded by the ancient order of \u003cem data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMilitum Sigillum Cristi de Templo\u003c\/em\u003e – or the Order of the Knights Templar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNow the order of the Knights Templar can mean a lot of different things to different people. If you’re a Hollywood producer, they’re a mysterious honor-bound secret society that pretty much fits into any film set from the 1120s to the 21\u003csup data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003est\u003c\/sup\u003e-century. If you’re a Pope, they were an amazingly effective military force—until a French King deeply indebted to them gets political and orders you to excommunicate them so he can seize all their assets. If you were an Ottoman, they were oddly self-aggrandizing pirates. If a Muslim, they were simply terrorists.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBut no matter your previous disposition, by the end of the 13\u003csup data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century, this Christian order was forced to scatter from the lands they had captured in the Eastern Mediterranean. Heroic fighters, they did not give up easily and wherever they went, they tended to raise up amazingly effective military defenses as well as plant vineyards (gotta have wine for mass).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhich brings us to this winery, and its long name:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eSometime around 1204 the Count of Provence granted Guillaume Catel, the Master of the House of Templars Provence, the Order of the Commanderie Peyrassol, thus forming a new military order in the heart of the hills of the Var, just above the village of Flassans-sur-Isole, France. So that is where the Peyrassol in the name comes from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhile the Order’s founding is a touch vague, its wine production is not. By 1256 the Order was producing over 28,000 liters of wine, to feed its own troops as well large numbers of pilgrims heading off to the Holy Land. This beautiful expanse of sun, soil and aspect became renowned as one of the jewels of Provence, and amazingly enough – not only has this domaine maintained wine production for over 765 years: but it still retains its magnificent reputation. And it shows in this bottle:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eA beautiful copper – salmon glow comes this limp liquid just being poured into the glass. And extraordinary smell of wet raspberries, freshly picked neroli and Meyer lemon bring for the beautiful delineation in this wine. This is Peyrassol’s top wine, and it is such not because it’s more “massive” or “full” than its cheaper brothers. Rather, it’s because of its precision, minerality, and gorgeous-drinking verve on the palate. I don’t believe I need to mention it, but I will – the wine is completely DRY, being a French rose. The finish is long and fresh, leaving the imbiber with the joyful combination of gooseberry and raspberries ripened by Provence sunshine.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOh, and why the Cuvee des Commandeurs? Because when you’re the knights of your own military order, you get to drink the very best. The texture stays light on its feet, with just enough fruit to round the edges before the finish snaps back into citrus zest and a spritzy, saline lift that lingers with poise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1312\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"\u003eThis is not a rosé built for spectacle. But it does explain what is going on here. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Lafages are in the vast area of France known as the Cotes Catalanes. That’s down on the Mediterranean crescent, right next to Spain (kinda close to Priorat). The area, if it had any kind of wine fame at all, used to be based on the quantity it could produce, particularly the quantity of high-alcohol wine it could produce. That and being too far away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Spain’s Priorat—but using the same grape varieties—means that it isn’t the most well known, highly regarded side of French wine production. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut let’s put all that aside for a moment, because the Lafages are the exception to the rule. With accolades from around the world like “almost too good to be true” - Jeb Dunnuck; or “I’m impressed with the collection of Jean-Marc Lefage” - Andrew Jeffords; or “[Jean-Marc Lafage] makes serious wines that warrant attention” - Robert Parker; here are wines that are serious and now of world  renown, but aren’t priced at that level (yet). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt opens with a burst of fresh red fruit flavors – strawberries, cherries, and Angel’s Kiss (angelus osculum) that will bring a smile to your face.  The palate is crisp and brilliantly clean and dry, with just enough fruit to please everyone. But the wine is more about its punctuated minerality, which it has in spades.  It’s like drinking an incredibly good La Croix cherry mineral water (no insult to Ingrid intended).  It’s as pure as water, but way more fun.  The finish is all zest and spritzy pizazz, lingering with its fresh minerality.  In a word, charming.  Plus, it also comes in the most gorgeous, tall sleek bottle you have ever seen. Please note that this wine has a glass stopper so no corkscrew needed, perfect for picnics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd yes, we must admit that this Rosé is one vintage back - Lafage is getting ready to release 2022 (he releases later than most) and we are selling 2021. But hey, the glass stopper is air tight, so there is no oxygen exposure, therefore no loss of vitality and fresh. The only thing that has been \"lost\" is the price.
