And with rosé, why not head straight for one of the best – Bandol.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eBandol sits in the cradle of southern France, directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Among these sunbathed hills, the thick-skinned Mourvedre grape (and its familial grape partners) basks in the heat while enjoying the cool sea breeze of these azure waters – it’s essentially, the ultimate in sunbathing. The result of this combination of climate and grape is one of the world’s great wine treasures, Bandol Rosé.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eIt probably goes without saying that this rosé is dry, even though it is the color of a blush. It is certainly worth saying that what is tucked inside these bottles is just insanely delicious – full of flavor and powerfully rich, almost like a red wine; yet also crisp and dry, like a white. And we have one of the best Bandols – Chateau Salettes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eSeventeen generations of Boyers have attended the gorgeous hillside estate of Chateau Salettes. And while that history is long, they also haven’t been resting on their laurels. Over the past decade they took on an ambitious modernization of the winery, insuring that when the 18th generation is ready to take over, this Bandol estate will be one of the leading lights of the area. In this bottling, that shows: \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eAromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, sea spray, brine and whispers of savory herbs abound from the glass upon the first pour. The palate is bold – again, this rose drinks like a red wine but you chill it like a white – and there is a broad and stratified depth here, a heft of bountiful luxuriance but also a clean, crisp and bright quality. Imagine yourself on a beach grilling lobster with tarragon butter, or mahi mahi with a coriander fennel crust; after just having surfed the perfect barrel – that’s what this wine is speaking about, a place of sunshine, sparkling fun, and simple culinary extravagance. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eFor those of you who know Bandol Rosé, you know of what I speak – but you also know there is a price to be paid. Bandol rosé is dearly loved and prized, and the best of the best are often $40 or more a bottle. In the grand scheme of “the best” in wine that is still cheap – ponder the price of Tete de Cru Champagne, white Burgundy, or the top Napa Cabernet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"paragraph-spacing-none\"\u003eYet here is one of the best, and because we bought it as direct as possible, we have it at an amazing price. Now is a great time to be drinking Rosé. The pages that Kermit has written about them alone rival those of his dear friend, Richard Olney, who wrote the definitive history of the domaine and was the first to introduce Kermit to the family in 1976. Their story might be considered mythic if it were not true.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"When Lucie “Lulu” Tempier married Lucien Peyraud in 1936, her father gave them Domaine Tempier, an active farm that had been in the family since 1834, near Le Plan du Castellet, just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol. Tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol (a wedding gift from his father-in-law) inspired Lucien to research the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eterroir\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003eof Bandol extensively.  Up until that point, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been systematically replanted to higher-yielding varietals. However, more research not only showed its historical roots to the area, but the grape proved to be more resistant to oxidation, producing wines with great aging potential. By 1941, with the assistance of neighboring\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003evignerons\u003c\/em\u003e, Lucien worked with the I.N.A.O. (\u003cem\u003eInstitut National des Appellations d’Origines\u003c\/em\u003e) to establish Bandol as its own A.O.C. Needless to say, large-scale replanting of Mourvèdre ensued, and Bandol now requires a fifty percent minimum in all reds. Lucien will forever be celebrated as the Godfather of Bandol, but also as the man who revived Mourvèdre to its former glory. Raising deep and structured wines of such refinement and longevity has made Domaine Tempier truly a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003egrand cru\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ede Provence\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Lulu and Lucien raised seven children, and nourishing family, friends, and wine lovers at table is a regularly celebrated tradition at the domaine. Much of that is attributed to Lulu, the beautiful, Marseillaise\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ematerfamilias\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewho has carried on the great Tempier family ritual of serving guests fresh, cool rosé, hearty, soulful reds, and copious amounts of delicious homemade Provençal cuisine. Her traditional hearth cooking has attracted attention throughout France, even bringing Alice Waters over from California to learn in Lulu’s kitchen. When Lucien retired, sons François and Jean-Marie shared management of the domaine with François in the vineyards and Jean-Marie in the cellars. The two made a formidable team. Though Lucien passed away in 1996, and his sons have now since retired, the torch has been passed to the young, energetic, and talented Daniel Ravier, who has just the right\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003esavoir faire\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eto carry on the great tradition and style of the domaine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Beyond our affection and the enduring bonds of our friendship, objectively the celebrity of Domaine Tempier also lies deep in the soils of Bandol. That’s down on the Mediterranean crescent, right next to Spain (kinda close to Priorat). The area, if it had any kind of wine fame at all, used to be based on the quantity it could produce, particularly the quantity of high-alcohol wine it could produce. That and being too far away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Spain’s Priorat—but using the same grape varieties—means that it isn’t the most well known, highly regarded side of French wine production. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut let’s put all that aside for a moment, because the Lafages are the exception to the rule. With accolades from around the world like “almost too good to be true” - Jeb Dunnuck; or “I’m impressed with the collection of Jean-Marc Lefage” - Andrew Jeffords; or “[Jean-Marc Lafage] makes serious wines that warrant attention” - Robert Parker; here are wines that are serious and now of world  renown, but aren’t priced at that level (yet). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt opens with a burst of fresh red fruit flavors – strawberries, cherries, and Angel’s Kiss (angelus osculum) that will bring a smile to your face.  The palate is crisp and brilliantly clean and dry, with just enough fruit to please everyone. But the wine is more about its punctuated minerality, which it has in spades.  It’s like drinking an incredibly good La Croix cherry mineral water (no insult to Ingrid intended).  It’s as pure as water, but way more fun.  The finish is all zest and spritzy pizazz, lingering with its fresh minerality.  In a word, charming.  Plus, it also comes in the most gorgeous, tall sleek bottle you have ever seen. Please note that this wine has a glass stopper so no corkscrew needed, perfect for picnics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd yes, we must admit that this Rosé is one vintage back - Lafage is getting ready to release 2022 (he releases later than most) and we are selling 2021. But hey, the glass stopper is air tight, so there is no oxygen exposure, therefore no loss of vitality and fresh. The only thing that has been \"lost\" is the price.
