Thea helped stabilize the family as large corporations tried to litigate away Jerome’s pending patents. And although Jerome passed away in 1997, his foundation has now invested over $210 million to make a better and more just world through the power of invention.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd along the way, they had a child – Eric Lemelson. Now as you can imagine, the child of such two amazing parents turned out to be a rather strong-willed individual himself. And since we have some darn tasty wine to get to, let’s just jump ahead to 1990, when Eric attended a business dinner in downtown Portland, Oregon.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe 1990s were the great blossoming time for Willamette Valley Pinot Noir – some amazing vineyards had been identified and planted to matching clonal material, and vintners had matured their craft from hobby-style, garage-based wineries into handcrafted, experience-based, world-class winemaking. Eric ordered a bottle of the local Pinot Noir, tasted it, and his mind was blown.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd then two worlds collided – Dorothy maintained a small farmhouse in the hills of Dundee outside of Portland. Eric had become a leading environmental attorney, and now he couldn’t shake the taste, flavor and texture of Oregon Pinot. And so, with his considerable resources he turned the small farmhouse and its garden into an organically farmed vineyard with a LEED-certified gravity-flow winery. Times change and keep on changing. And one of the unfortunate things I’ve experienced is that number #3 hasn’t been so true in recent years – Willamette Valley Pinot has climbed up in price averaging in at California levels and well, most Oregon producers now say, “we don’t want to say we’re Burgundian” and by some of the flavors they are getting, they are definitely not (apologies here to all Oregon Pinot producers – four hot vintages in a row doesn’t help).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo when I got a shot to bring this winery – Evesham Wood—back to Wisconsin, I absolutely jumped at the chance. Why? Because the Pinots are absolutely fantastic. They taste like Burgundy with a dash of Willamette sun and long, cool hang-time autumn thrown in. Further, the prices are downright reasonable, dare I say cheap?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is exactly why Oregon’s wine industry took off in the early 1990s – great, fresh, elegant Pinot Noir at prices that could be had at every restaurant table in the land, or backyard party. I think Evesham Wood is an absolute triumph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBased in the Eola-Amity Hills, Evesham (and its owner, Erin Nuccio) is a hidden gem. Or maybe a diamond in the rough – when I first requested a visit at the winery the response I got was, “We don’t have a tasting room, why does he want to come here?” After five more tries, I got a late afternoon, garage-door tasting on top of a barrel. To me, it felt like I was in Burgundy. And that’s because this wine takes me back:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the nose it fully displays the wonderful terroir or Eola-Amity. In Eola, where freshness is preserved due to the Van Duzer Corridor, this means the wine has got great Pinot spice \/ strawberry fruit character but also has had a chance to fully develop all of Pinot’s glorious complexity. On the palate you get tension and energy, a feeling that you can just keep on drinking because it’s so refreshing … yet it doesn’t lack for depth of character. No one is naïve about the difficulties and challenges of growing Pinot Noir away from its home in Burgundy (even there, of course, it isn’t easy). Chemistry is now a “sub-label” of the Willamette Valley winery Stoller. Stoller has one of the biggest tasting rooms in the Valley, and if you’ve been to Willamette, you’ve probably experienced Stoller. Stoller wInery, along with its founder Bill Stoller, are actually a larger corporation, which includes farming many other vineyards in Willamette, as well as now owning another winery, Chehalem. All of this is to say that they’ve got a lot of excellent fruit around, and Chemistry was designed to showcase that fruit but at a more competitive price than Stoller’s estate wines. Chemistry was already darn good stuff, but then, nature intervened - the fires came. What to do?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBill Stoller is kind of a giant in the Oregon wine industry, having first started farming grapes in 1983. He’s got the means, and he’s got the contacts. So he reformatted Chemistry and went looking for non-fire-affected grapes. And he found them, but across borders. Some in Oregon, but some in California. Here, you're getting the best of California Pinot, and the best of Oregon Pinot. The sum really is greater than the parts. The wine opens with ripe red raspberry aromas, Rainier strawberries, and hints of orange zest. These aromatics remind me of Oregon. On the palate are notes of bright cherry, plush tannins and just a bit of baking spice from the barrel - to me, all notes of Carneros Pinot. And together, they perfectly harmonize, giving you a Pinot that at its price, just can’t be beat. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd I am not the only one to appreciate this wine - Bill Stoller conceptualized Alliance as a one-off thing. One vintage to help make it through. Then, they got so many requests to have it back, that they made it again!
