2012 Yalumba “The Guardian” Shiraz Viognier
A twist on Shiraz: cooler climate Shiraz blended with a dash of Viognier. That’s right, Australia’s got varying climates. Some of them are quite warm, others are cool. And just like Miles Davis played it, wine can be deliciously cool. Particularly this one: Yalumba’s The Guardian Shiraz is black-fruited, with smoky, clovey, blackberry notes and touches of baking spices, with a vibrant acidity coupled with an elegant framework of tannins and minerality. The Viognier helps “set” the color and also provides richness across the palate, plus an aromatic lift. Think Australia can’t produce elegant, food-friendly wines with serious aging potential? Think again.
