2013 Jean-Marc Bouley Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Red Burgundy
The young Jean-Marc Bouley is a striking for his all-around good looks, his jovial demeanor and his preternatural ability to make delectable wines. Born into a family of vignerons, he is now the fifth generation to work the soils of their Domaine between Pommard and Volnay. At the age of 14, he began working with his father in the vines and winery, and he has completely run the Domaine since his father’s retirement in 2012.
Bouley’s Domaine is one where you can taste the Côte d’Or — the Golden Slope — which is Burgundy. Meaning Jean-Marc’s Domaine ranges from vineyards at the bottom of Volnay and wines classified as Bourgogne Rouge — through the middle of the slope across vineyards classified as Volnay Village wines — all the way up to the peak vineyards at the top of the slope. It’s fascinating to explore Burgundy vineyards like this — their orientations to the sun, the degrees of their slopes and the qualities of their soils and underlying rocks. And today, what we have to offer is an exceptional deal on the highest portion of Jean-Marc’s exemplary Côte d’Or vineyards. The Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, the portion of the slope which sits just above the Volnay appellation but just below the tree line. It is a magical wine:
As Jean-Marc notes, he likes his Burgundies “straight,” meaning with a precision to the fruit, a vibrancy to the acidity, and a suppleness to the tannins so they can couple the wine to its energetic frame. Here delightful notes of fresh raspberries, touches of scone spices, and scents of cranberry dot the aromas of the wine. The palate is quick and crisp, with a hint of forest floor and sous bois and a structure that stands up to some of Burgundy’s richer dishes, like Beef Bourguignon. From the 2013 vintage, this wine is drinking perfectly right now.
As Jasper Morris, Master of Wine, notes: “He [Jean-Marc Bouley] also produces a small quantity of exceptionally well-defined and well-structured Burgundy, which he sells under the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune appellation. They represent remarkable value for money and are the equal of many Burgundies selling at twice the price.”
We’ve got a great price on this wine, but like most of our Burgundy offers, there isn’t much. Grab some while you can!
