2014 Quilt Reserve Napa Cabernet

Know Caymus Special Select?

Of course you do. You know who made it for 15 years? Joseph J. Wagner. You know who made it before him? His father, who gave Joe J. Wagner all his skills and insight.

Don’t worry – father and son are still at the helm of Caymus Special Select. They’ve hired a winemaker to manage the day to day, but they are definitely still involved in the wine.

Yet son, having such a towering figure as the founder of Caymus as his father, also wanted his own project – something that he could build up and make on his own. The territory was clear: after years of making Caymus Special Select, this new project was going to be a Napa Cabernet. And the result is this – Quilt Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet.

So named Quilt because like Caymus, it comes from a patchwork of vineyards across Napa Valley. Selecting the nine unique parcels and interweaving them into a harmonious whole, Joseph J. Wagner has done it again. With Caymus Special Select being so allocated these days, I urge you to try this side by side.

We got a hot price on our limited allocation, so don’t miss it.

Winemaker Notes:

“Dark ruby red. A complex mix of dark and dense berry fruits, chocolate hazelnut cream, coffee beans, vanilla, red plum, and baking spices along with hints of strawberry, wild field herbs, tobacco and roasted meats. Bold and intense, with blackberry cobbler, crème de cassis, toasted hazelnut, chocolate and toffee balanced with dark berry fruits, licorice, and hints of cardamom. A full-bodied, complex wine with layers of concentrated black fruit and excellent balance. The wine’s breadth and structure is complemented by a supple, velvety mouthfeel, with fine-grained tannins. The finish is long and satisfying.”

Critical Acclaim:

“92 points.

“Exhibits an alluring mix of cherry, herb, anise and cedar flavors, but what stands out is the textural polish and nuance. Notes of chocolate-covered coffee bean show in the mix. Drink now through 2030. 325 cases made.” – Wine Spectator
