2015 Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Vin
“Cuvelier Los Andes is owned by Bertrand and Jean-Guy Cuvelier, part-owners of renowned Bordeaux Chateau Leoville-Poyferre in Saint Julien. The estate is located in the Uco Valley at the foothills of the Andes and encompasses 115 acres of still young vines. The consulting winemaker is Michel Rolland.
“At the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Cuvelier and his young brother Albert, anticipating the inevitable rise in “Chateau-bottled wines” to the detriment of the “tailor-made” blends of the wine merchants, decided to purchase top quality estates in the Bordeaux area. They bought Chateau Le Crock in 1903, then Chateau Camensac in 1912 and finally the prestigious Chateau Leoville Poyferre in 1920. It is interesting to note that, in early 1914, Paul Cuvelier had already come to Argentina, to discover the wines of Mendoza.
“In 1998 Bertrand Cuvelier made the happy choice of personally accompanying Michel Rolland in his great Argentine project, which was to become the Clos de los Siete group. Three years later, Jean-Guy Cuvelier decided to join his cousin Bertrand in the joint aim of building a winery and producing fine wines worthy of the family tradition.
Winery tasting note: “Tasting: great intensity of color. A very young and elegant violet-red, typical of the varietal. Excellent varietal characteristics whichinclude aromas of sweet ripe plums, marmalade and dulce de leche. Very inviting. Very nice first mouth: full, juicy and meaty. Excellent roundness with a taste typical of the varietal. A robust, mature wine with a long finish.”
“95 points.” – Tim Atkin
“This is a tannic and powerful red with a linear backbone and blue fruits. Full to medium body, a racy backbone and a long, intense finish. Shows focus and muscle. Leave for two or three years.” – James Suckling
The Grand Vin:
Winery tasting note: “We like to introduce our Grand Vin as the Argentinean cousin of Château Léoville-Poyferré, 2nd Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien, our family’s most renowned Estate in Bordeaux, France. Grand Vin is an exceptional Bordeaux-style blend, with an impressive tannic structure from our best Malbec, rounded, balanced and completed with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot.”
“A decadent nose that remains on-point and focused with morello cherries, mulberry compote, dark chocolate, charcuterie and hazelnuts. While the nose may be big and the palate certainly bold with fleshy fruit, it carves out a neat structure, complete with firm tannins and a reserved yet long and fruit-forward finish. Drink in 2025.” – James Suckling
“Cuvelier’s Grand Vin all comes from the highest part of the estate, just below Monteviejo and is a wonderfully complex, balsamic cuvée of Malbec with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Floral, refined and well balanced, despite its 15% alcohol, with a volatile lift and nuanced tannins. 2020-28.” – Tim Atkin
