2017 Domaine Denis Carre Hautes Cotes de Beaune Les Perriere Rouge

$19.99

Denis Carré was born in Burgundy, but he wasn’t born into a wine family. But even as a teenager, Denis loved vines and wines, especially Burgundy. And while harvesting grapes in Burgundy vineyards, Denis resolved he was going to make his own Burgundies.

With his savings, Denis rented a parcel of vines and began making wine. And with the money he made at a night job in a garage, he began constructing a small winery in the village of Meloisey in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune.

A half-century later, that old, small structure stands in the shadows of a new, large winery, and the Carré family owns 13 hectares of vineyards in eight appellations of the most famous hillsides in Burgundy. Every vintage, Domaine Denis Carré bottles 12 different Burgundies.

Denis has ceded the family domaine to his son, Martial, and his daughter, Gaëtane. Martial, who studied at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune, makes the wine, Gaëtane manages the business, and both are guided by ideals of green farming and old-school Burgundy.

The 2017 Hautes-Côtes de Beaune La Perrière is from 50-year-old vines planted in clay and limestone soils, and it’s pure Pinot Noir. It’s plush cherry and red raspberry. It’s earthy, round, and fresh, with all of it’s parts singing together seamlessly, easily, beautifully.

This is the classic Burgundy lover’s Burgundy, made by a family whose mission — from one generation to the next — is making pure, old-school Burgundy. Let this wine remind you how primal, how intoxicating, how inspiring Burgundy can be.

Critical Acclaim:

“93 points.

“Siblings Martial and Gaetane Carré source fruit from their four-hectare parcel for this ethereal Pinot Noir. Wonderfully pure, bursting with ripe raspberry, Morello cherry, tart redcurrant, with a hint of vanilla from its 11 months in oak.” – Decanter
