2018 Rose Rock Zephirine Pinot Noir

Winery notes:

“Our exceptional run of vintages here in Oregon continues with 2018. The season started on a slightly wet and cool note leading to late bud break, but caught up quickly. After dry weather and occasional heat spikes in July and August, the end of summer brought comfortable temperatures, a little rainfall, and the perfect set up for harvest.

“Our Zéphirine Pinot Noir is a barrel selection cuvée from the Roserock vineyard, and is a reference expression of the site. Zéphirine conveys purity and beauty, reflects winemaker Véronique Drouhin’s dedication to elegance and finesse, and will age meaningfully for years to come. The name refers to the Zéphirine Drouhin variety of climbing rose, which is known for its fragrance and beauty.

“The 2018 Zéphirine adeptly conveys the beauty of its name and the special qualities of its place. On the nose, it opens with a lovely perfume of spring blossoms, rose petals, and a touch of pomegranate. A striking, savory palate offers notes of fig, plum, roasted mushrooms, and a hint of allspice with black pepper. Bright and exciting from start to finish, the balanced tannic core leads to a lovely finish full of character and structure. The intense mouthfeel suggests that the 2018 Zéphirine will age beautifully for the next 15 to 20 plus years.”

Critical Acclaim:

“96 points.

“Very intense violets and fresh wild cherries, blueberries and a spicy, bracken-like note with a stony edge, too. The palate shows the clarity of tannin that is the hallmark of great pinot noir – super fresh, well-defined and fine yet powerful – carrying cherry flavors long and fresh. Drink or hold.” – James Suckling

“94 points.

“Layered aromas, with a pretty juxtaposition of tobacco leaves and dried flowers accenting a core of sweet rhubarb, raspberry and blueberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate is silky and elegant, offering loads of earth and spice-laced fruits and a long, uplifted and juicy finish.” – Wine Advocate
