The first of our four tastings of the wines of Austria takes us to the south of Steiermark — the south of the south of Austria, just over the border from Slovenia. Nowhere in Europe is the viticultural landscape more picturesque than in the Südsteiermark. Nowhere in the world are there more fragrant and elegant white wines than in the region. The Südsteiermark is an ideal terroir for Sauvignon Blanc, which comprises one-fifth of the vines in the region. The Südsteiermark is also ideal for Morillon, which is what local winemakers call Chardonnay.
In the heart of the Südsteiermark is the Sattlerhof winery, which has been making wine in the region since 1887. The owners of the winery are brothers Alex and Andi Sattler, and the white wines they’re making are exemplary. In their vineyards, Alex and Andi cultivate their grapes organically and biodynamically. In their cellar, they make wines with extended skin macerations and long lees aging.
Leading our journey to the Südsteiermark and the Sattlerhof winery is Master Sommelier Jesse Becker, who writes extensively about the wines of Germany and Austria. Jesse was sommelier at Tra Vigne in Napa Valley, NoMI at the Park Hyatt in Chicago, and Frasca Food and Wine in Colorado. He’ll be your guide for the evening.
