Starmont Pinot 375 ml
A hundred forty-five years ago, at the southern end of Napa Valley, the Stanley family began growing grapes. They were quite possibly the first people to realize that this area – what would become the Carneros AVA – was a match for Pinot Noir. Its foggy mornings and cool afternoon breezes ensure a long and steady ripening time, making the resulting Pinots bursting with fruit flavor.
About 25 years ago, the owners of Merryvale Winery in St. Helena saw this potential and founded a partnership with the Stanley Ranch Estate. It was important to them to honor the land, so they converted the vineyards to sustainable farming, recycle 100% of their water, are entirely solar powered, and are now Napa Green certified (that’s a big deal out there and is quite meaningful; here, in our climate, it would be nearly impossible).
The results are in this pocket rocket:
This, to my palate, is classic Carneros Pinot Noir: a nose of crushed strawberries, high-toned cherry fruit, crushed strawberries, black tea and subtle baking spices showcase the palate that is to come. There is a richness of the California sun in this Pinot – it’s supple and rounded; all of Pinot’s exquisitely supple texture is captured in this bottle. It’s bottled under cap (and is current vintage), so it’s fresh as a daisy from Napa’s spectacular 2013 vintage and is drinking great right now—but it will also cellar for another seven years.
This is a 375-mL bottle, perfect to take on a picnic for two, smuggle into a movie theater, or to start with your grilled tuna and romesco sauce. We love Pocket Rockets!
