Priorat As It’s Meant To Be Enjoyed: A Vertical Tasting of Mas Martinet - Green Bay and Madison Only
Milwaukee - Tuesday, October 17
Delafield - Tuesday, October 24
Great wines tell a story indelibly linked to time and place. One of the best ways to explore the story of a particular wine is through a vertical tasting of several vintages. Unfortunately, the way that wine is usually sold—with only the most recent vintages available for purchase—makes vertical tastings extremely rare. Luckily, Waterford has sourced back vintages from one of the most legendary producers in Priorat, an area in northeastern Spain renowned for its wines ageability.
Just over 30 years ago, a group of winemakers, scientists, and visionaries looked to the Village of Gratallops in the Catalan region of Spain as the epicenter of a wine revolution.
Josep Lluís Pérez, a biologist by training, was a founding member of this group of pioneers who found ancient Grenache and Carignan vines on steep slopes surrounding the wine region of Priorat (named for the Monasteries that dot the landscape). These producers rejuvenated the area and began making powerful, structured wines that could hold their own with the best in the world.
Pérez’s vineyards on barren slate-laden slopes became known as Mas Martinet, and produce some of the most prestigious wines from one of the most acclaimed regions in Spain.
Today, the winery is headed by his daughter Sara, who is leading the charge to ensure Priorat’s place in the pantheon of the world’s great wines.
The wines of Priorat are bold and structured, and can best be appreciated after cellaring for several years. Fortunately, Waterford has secured some exclusive back-vintages direct from the winery to offer you a one-of-a-kind glimpse into everything these beautiful wines have to offer.
We’ll be tasting through six vintages of Mas Martinet, including some extremely limited offerings from the best and oldest vines on their estate.
Don’t miss your chance to explore one of the world’s great wine regions in depth through the lens of one of the most exciting makers working today.
