Champagne – the most delicious drinking beverage in the world?  I think very much so.

Yet for all its deliciousness, and fame, glory, history and expense, few of us really know what Champagne is.  Sure, we know the slogan “Champagne only comes from Champagne, France” but in terms of flavor, how does that apply to what is in our glass?  And for those of us who drink Champagne like Coco Chanel “only on two occasions – when I am in love and when I am not” – how are we to stretch our Champagne budget to cover all such occasions?

Clearly a tasting is needed.  So here it is:

In this tasting we explore the why, the how, and the history of Champagne while linking all of these factors to what you taste in the glass.  In the first flight, we take a look at the legal definition of Champagne and what it actually means – both geographically and in wine production.  In the second flight we examine the blend practices in Champagne – both across grape varieties and across vintages.  In the third flight, we explore the newest trend in Champagnes – site-specific, vineyard-specific wines.  Clearly this is a tasting not to miss!
