From the great wines of Bordeaux and of Napa —the first two regions in our Big Red series for the Winter—we travel back across the Atlantic to the Old World and the fine red wines of Italy.
Italy is the world’s biggest wine producer with a quarter of the world’s production and a third of all imports to the U.S. The home of such popular products as Moscato, Chianti, Amarone and Prosecco, Italy has a rich and diverse wine heritage dating back more than two thousand years.
Amongst this rich and diverse industry are the ‘Killer B’s’ – Barolo (the ’wine of kings’), Barberesco, and Brunello de Montalcino. They represent some of the most collected wines of Italy, and 2 distinctive varietals: Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. They compete with the Classified Growths of Bordeaux, the Grand Crus of Burgundy as well as the cult favorites of California. These are Italy’s greatest red wines, capable of aging over decades, attracting loads of attention, and providing tastes and aromas not found elsewhere in the World. Our selections will provide examples their respective regions, Piedmont and
Tuscany, and provide the opportunity to experience characteristics of these great wines.
Along with Italy’s two Big B’s we will tack on the contenders to the Big Red Throne – Italy’s two A’s – Amarone and Aglianico.
