The wine world is in the middle of a red blend craze. But the truth is that most wines from most appellations are red blends, which is simply red wine made from more than one grape. Most blends are famous from regions across France – Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley in particular – but are now being replicated world-wide, in a seemingly unstoppable course of deliciousness.
In this tasting we begin with the Bordeaux family of grape varietals. You might think of Bordeauxs as wines made from one grape— but Bordeauxs are among the wine world’s most famous red blends, with its primary grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Beginning in the Nineteenth Century, Bordeaux inspired the idea of blending grapes in appellations around the world. In the Twentieth Century, Bordeaux became the model for California’s blends of Cabernet and Merlot.
Next we shift our attention to the Rhone. The Rhone, a classic French wine region, starts in central France, just south of Lyon, and stretches almost to the Mediterranean Sea. The region cultivates a vast variety of grapes from many famous appellations along the Rhone River making blends from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and more. But we won’t stop in the Rhone – we will continue our journey across the world with these blends.
Finally, we bring it on home to Zinfandel a wine made famous by California. The Zinfandel grape is planted in more than 10% of all California vineyards. It makes big, ripe wines with jammy, fruity characteristics. While Zinfandel has been provided enjoyment to its drinkers, it proved mysterious to grapevine geneticists for the better part of 50 years. Why the mystery? And why is it so often blended? You will have to come to the tasting to find out!
