From the west of France and the wines of Bordeaux—the first region in our Red Blend Series—we travel across France to the east, to the red blend wines of the Rhone Valley.

The Rhone is one of the classic French wine regions. It starts in central France, just south of Lyon, and stretches almost to the Mediterranean Sea. The region cultivates a vast variety of grapes from many famous appellations along the Rhone River. From appellations like Cornas, Cote Rotie, and Hermitage in the Northern Rhône—which blends their primary red grape, Syrah, with white grapes Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier—to appellations like Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Vacqueyras in the Southern Rhone—which makes red blends from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, and many other grapes. There simply isn’t a better example of a red wine blending region than the Rhone Valley.

Because of the number of grapes cultivated in the region, and because of its number of classic appellations, our tour of Rhone Valley Red Blends will be a dizzying, phantasmagorical, blow out of a tasting! The tasting won’t just show you classic styles of Rhone Valley red blends. And it won’t just show you great bottles of Rhone Valley red blends from great estates. It will alter your consciousness and understanding of all red wine blends.
