It began cultivating vines in about 4,000 BCE. From about 1100 to 200 BCE, the Phoenicians, followed by the Carthaginians contributed their wine cultures to Spain. And after 200 BCE, Spain became a principal wine supplier to the Roman Empire.
Today, Spain has more territory dedicated to vineyards than either France or Italy. Over the past forty years, advancements in Spain’s wine industry have made it the world’s third largest wine producer. Now Spain is converting an industry built for quantity into a diverse landscape of high quality producers covering more than 70 classified appellations.
