The Backbone Bourbon Company kicked off its journey in 2011, quickly earning a reputation for bold, powerful whiskeys. They were actually one of the first companies sourcing from MGP (now known as the Ross & Squibb Distillery) and have always managed to snag some choice barrels over the years. This limited yearly release stated upon their 10 year Anniversary of aging and bottling whiskey, hence the moniker “Decade Down”.

Decade Down Uncut features a blend of their signature house-style barrels, ranging from five to seven years old, with 25% of the bourbon further aged for 12 months in sherry barrels. The mash bill is composed of 74% corn, 21% rye, and 5% malted barley and at 110 proof, delivers a bold punch that’s as smooth as it is complex.

On the nose, there is a sophisticated array of aromas. Notes of gently toasted bread and velvety almond butter, interwoven with the warm, nutty allure of honey-roasted peanuts and a luxurious caramel topping that beckons for deeper exploration.

The palate reveals a decadently creamy and sweet character. Rich oak emerges as the foundation, lending a mature depth, while a seamless fusion of integrated spices and roasted nuts unfolds, creating a layered, robust body that is both intricate and satisfyingly full. Each sip delivers a joyous excess of flavors that still manage to be balanced and meticulously arranged.

Decade Down culminates in a remarkably lasting finish, where the notes of oak spice gracefully intertwine with hints of semi-sweet chocolate. This lingering finale not only reinforces the delightful sweetness that permeates the dram but also leaves an impression of precision and elegance.
