In a vintage that rewarded clarity, patience, and terroir fidelity, 2022 Château La Gaffelière stands as one of the Right Bank’s great balancing acts — a wine that somehow threads the warmth of the season into a shape of classical Saint-Émilion brightness. The estate’s unique limestone amphitheater, a slope that seems to breathe cool air upward even in the hottest years, gives the wine its unmistakable signature: a vertical lift that carries fruit, spice, and stone in equal measure.

This vintage,

In a vintage filled with standout wines, 2022 Château La Gaffelière achieved rare consensus among top critics, earning three of the highest scores of the year:

99 – James Suckling
This is a wine of incredible purity and verticality… so bright, so fine, with a finish that seems to vibrate with energy.

98 – Vinous (Neal Martin)
One of the most precise and mineral-driven wines of the vintage… crystalline, beautifully sculpted, and effortless.

98 – Decanter
Silky and harmonious, with superb definition and tension — a benchmark La Gaffelière.

And the wine lives up to every word. On the nose, dark cherry and mulberry swell with violet, warm spice, and the unmistakable lifted perfume that limestone-grown Merlot can achieve only at its very best. Cabernet Franc — La Gaffelière’s quiet star — threads graphite, cedar shavings, and a cool mineral line that tightens the wine’s posture.

The palate is both sumptuous and architectural: flowing fruit framed by precise, feather-fine tannins and a slow-unfolding finish that carries crushed rock, dried rose, and sweet spice well after the last sip. For all its concentration, the wine is shockingly graceful — a product not just of a warm year, but of a terroir that knows exactly how to translate heat into harmony.

2022 is a landmark release for La Gaffelière, and one of the most critically decorated wines in all of Saint-Émilion this year.
