Upon opening the bottle, beautiful aromas of orange pith, vibrant citrus, pink grapefruit and white peach playfully leap from the glass, filling the room with these delightful aromas. The palate continues in suit – it’s vibrant to the point of prancing, with a fresh spring in its step that will leave you feeling uplifted. The finish is quick and refreshing, completely charming and fun. If there is a liquid that could personify adults being wheedled by their kids into barreling down a slip and slide, this is that nectar.
And now of course, at Waterford we can’t leave it at just “this wine is utterly delicious.” We want to be a touch educational. So here goes:
Chateau Lancyre is in the eponymous hamlet in the tiny region of Pic Saint Loup, Languedoc, in southern France. Now Languedoc is a fairly large and varied region – both in terms of wine production and geography – and residents of Pic Saint Loup will tell you that their village makes the best wine in the region. By and large, I would agree with them. Further, residents of Pic Saint Loup will tell you that Chateau Lancyre is the top producer. Now that claim is more debatable but to my palate, this wine competes with some of the best on the Mediterranean Crescent (including Bandol), and yet is always half the price.
