Blended bourbon is having a moment. From producers like Barrell (whose Vantage was #3 whiskey of the year last year) to the sought-after Smoke Wagon, craft blending is producing some of the best (and priciest) bourbons on the market.
The formula is deceptively simple. Find some great bourbon producers, buy their juice, and blend it with complementary styles from other great producers to make something unique and delicious.
Easier said than done. With many great distilleries focused on producing their own products, sourcing bourbon is getting harder and harder. Luckily, we've found a boutique blended bourbon that doesn't break the bank, and holds its own with the big names in bespoke blending.
Debonair Bourbon from 28 Mile Distilling takes a prized 4-year high rye (21%) bourbon from Tennessee, and blends it with a pair of Kentucky bourbons - one aged in Cognac casks, the other in Sherry casks. The spice of the rye is balanced by the cask finishing, creating an exceptionally balanced and smooth bourbon.
28 Mile Distilling is based in Highwood, IL - 28 miles north of Chicago. During Prohibition, Highwood's Hotel Moraine was the home base of Rose Miller, one of the most prolific and elusive distillers and bootleggers in Chicagoland. With her true identity concealed by shell corporations and dummy distributors, the producer of Miller's sought after spirits became known as simply "The Debonair". 28 Mile's inaugural blend is an homage to the quality and infamy of her spirits.
This is a perfect sipping bourbon at a price that makes it ideal for leveling up your favorite classic cocktails. We've found it makes an amazing Manhattan with some Spanish vermouth.
"Aromas of vanilla wafer cookies, cinnamon pastry, bavarian crème, bananas flambé, buttered sweet corn bread and candied cherries with a lightly tannic, crisp, dry medium body and a tingling, delightful, medium-length spiced graham cracker and black licorice finish. A spicy and fruit-laden bourbon in a velvety package." - 93pts Beverage Tasting Institute
