Chateau Montelena has one of the most storied histories in Napa Valley. Founded in 1882, it was one of the largest wineries in the state at the turn of the 20th century. Prohibition halted production on the estate until 1968 when Jim Barrett, drawn to the mix of soils, slopes and biodiversity of the property, purchased the Estate.
In 1976 Chateau Montelena helped catapult California to the forefront of the wine world at the Judgement of Paris. This wine tasting pitted the best of California wines against the top wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux. Four white Burgundies were tasted against six California Chardonnays. When the scores were tallied, it was Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay was declared the winner.
Today, under the direction of Jim's son Bo, Chateau Montelena's Cabernets shine as brightly as their famous Chardonnay, and their Estate Cabernet always ranks among the top echelon on California Cabs, with a price tag to match.
The 2018 is nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon, with just a hint of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc rounding out the blend.
