Canuco — The Small Child of the Douro Who Has Grown Up Beautifully
You may already know Pedro Coelho and Pormenor from our earlier emails on the Vidente and the Druida. If so, you know the philosophy: a former wine commerce professional who founded Pormenor in 2013 with a fierce conviction about what he did not want from Douro wine — high alcohol, over-extraction, heavy new oak — and an equally fierce conviction about what the Douro could produce when someone paid genuine attention to it: freshness, minerality, elegance, restraint.
Pormenor means “detail” in Portuguese. Details are everything.
Canuco means “small child.”
The name is the philosophy in miniature. Where Pedro’s Vidente and Druida draw on 40-95-year-old field-blend vines at high elevation on the granite and schist soils of the Cima Corgo, the Canuco is built from younger vines — harvested with the specific intention of capturing youthful energy: round tannins, beautiful fresh fruit, that particular brightness and joie de vivre that old vines, for all their extraordinary depth, cannot quite replicate. If the Reserva wines are the wise old men of the portfolio, Canuco is the brilliant youngest sibling — full of life, perhaps less profound on paper, and considerably more fun at the dinner table on a Tuesday evening.
Pedro farms exclusively indigenous varieties at high elevations — 500 to 700 meters above sea level on north and northeast-facing exposures that shield the vines from the Douro’s severe summer sun. No temperature control. No additives. Natural fermentation in stainless steel. The result is wine that tastes unmistakably of the place it came from, without the heavyweight extraction that the Douro’s powerful reputation has historically demanded.
The 2019 Canuco is now six years old — a beautiful moment for a wine like this. The youthful energy Pedro captured at harvest has softened and integrated just enough to reveal genuine complexity underneath the bright fruit: red plum, violets and vanilla on the nose, a whisper of smoke adding depth and intrigue. The palate is medium-bodied and limpid — round tannins with vibrant acidity providing the structural lift that makes every sip feel alive rather than merely pleasant. The finish is clean, persistent and genuinely satisfying.
Jancis Robinson, tasting through the Pormenor range, described the wines as wines with “freshness, minerality and good acidity” — descriptions that apply to every wine in the portfolio but perhaps most immediately to the Canuco, where Pedro’s freshness-above-all philosophy is most directly expressed.
Pour it with roasted chicken, lamb chops, a plate of presunto and aged Manchego, or a slow-cooked mushroom ragù. It is equally magnificent simply open on the counter with nothing more demanding than good company and a willingness to be pleasantly, bibulously surprised by what the Douro can taste like when someone pays attention to the details.
Pedro Coelho is a larger-than-life, positive, gregarious force of nature — his importer’s own description, and one I find entirely convincing. The Canuco is all of those things in a glass.
