"Here's a little hidden gem of a seasonal release beer that has become one of my favorite late winter/early spring favorites! It's Tyranena Brewing Company's 'IceHenge' Belgian-Style Dubbel.
The Tyranena Brewing Company was established in 1999 in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and loves to draw inspiration from the surrounding glacial landscape for the names and stories of their brews. The 'IceHenge' moniker here refers to a much more recent and modern "legend" than those given to some of their other signature beers (such as naming their porter after Chief Blackhawk) and apparently derives from a group of loyal tasting-room regulars, constructing their "own stone hedge" out of ice on the frozen waters of nearby Rock Lake. Whatever the historical nature (or lack thereof), pertaining to the story behind this beer, you're sure to enjoy this rich and complex rendition of a traditional Belgian favorite!
Originating from Belgian Trappist monasteries, the Dubbel style is traditionally a rich, dark ale which boasts a malt-forward profile and distinct fruity and spicy notes that come from the signature yeast strains that are used. IceHenge is a wonderful local, accessible version of this style, that is much less expensive than many of the Belgian offerings and conveniently sold in the classic American six-pack!
The ale pours a deep, lush mahogany hue into your glass with aromas characterized by notes of dark fruits such as raisins and figs, accompanied by a subtle spiciness derived from aforementioned Belgian yeast.
On the palate, the malt-forward nature is in the forefront, offering a delightful blend of flavors, such as caramel, toffee, and a dark sugar sweetness. The Belgian yeast contributes a hint of clove and pepper, adding layers of complexity. You get just enough heat from the alcohol within to leave you feeling warm and satisfied.
The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, with moderate carbonation which lends itself to supporting the full-bodied nature of this brew. The finish is long and lingering and despite this beer's richness, it doesn't come across as being overly heavy and excessively thick but rather achieves a harmonious balance.
Pair this exquisite Dubbel with rich and savory dishes such as braised meats, stews, or a creamy blue cheese. The beer's robust flavors and intricate profile make it an excellent companion for hearty and flavorful cuisine.
For a limited time, you can purchase a six-pack of Tyranena's 'IceHenge' Belgian-style Dubbel Ale for only $10.49! Act fast, though: This seasonal offering doesn't remain in the market for long and very soon, Lake Mills' version of Stonehenge will start to melt away.
