Big Red Spain: Priorat, Riberia del Duero, and so much more
Spain boasts a varied viticultural landscape from varied climates, to varietals and approaches to winemaking. Vines have been cultivated since Roman times, and the nation has more vineyards than any global wine producer. With all the variety and innovation that have swept Spain since the turn of the century, it’s easy to lose sight of what put Spain on the map in the first place – Powerful, elegant, and ageworthy wines featuring Tempranillo, Garnacha, and their blending partners.
Rioja is still the cradle of traditional Spanish winemaking, and Ribera del Duero – with superstars like Vega Sicilia and Pingus – still boasts some of Spain’s most coveted wines. In addition to these two iconic regions, we will explore Priorat – where French influence is creating rich and structured wines rivaling the best of Bordeaux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Toro – a relative newcomer to the scene that is taking Tempranillo to new heights.
What unites these regions is balance: acidity and freshness are increasingly being prioritized over brute strength and high alcohol. At the same time, the paradigm of lavishly aging wines in new French barrique is being toned down. Instead, modern Spanish winegrowers want to have their cake and eat it – the best red wines are both gloriously concentrated and yet refined, imbued with fresh acidity and poise.
Join us as we explore both the traditional and modern styles of Spanish Red Wine and enjoy offerings from iconic Bodegas and up and coming winemakers ready to take Spain and the world by storm.
