Few names in the world of wine command the reverence of Château d'Yquem. For more than 400 years—and on land cultivated for nearly 900—Yquem has stood alone as the benchmark for sweet wine. It is the only estate to have been awarded the singular classification of Premier Cru Supérieur in the historic 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, a distinction that elevated it above every other Sauternes producer and acknowledged what generations of wine lovers already knew: Yquem is in a class entirely by itself.

What makes Château d'Yquem remarkable is not simply its rarity or longevity, but its uncanny ability to balance immense sweetness with extraordinary freshness. The wines possess astonishing concentration while remaining graceful, vibrant, and endlessly complex. Great vintages evolve for a century or more, revealing layers of honey, apricot, saffron, marmalade, candied citrus, crème brûlée, toasted almond, tropical fruit, beeswax, and exotic spice, all supported by a spine of acidity that keeps every sip alive.

The estate encompasses approximately 113 hectares planted primarily to Sémillon (around 75%) with the balance Sauvignon Blanc. Sitting atop the highest hill in Sauternes, Yquem benefits from exceptional drainage and a unique combination of gravel, clay, limestone, and sandy soils. More importantly, it occupies the ideal position where cool autumn mornings foster the development of Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot" that gently dehydrates the grapes, concentrating sugars, acidity, and flavor while adding remarkable aromatic complexity.

Harvest at Yquem is unlike virtually anywhere else in the wine world. Pickers may pass through the same vineyard six to ten times, selecting only berries that have reached the perfect stage of noble rot. Each vine may ultimately yield just a single glass of finished wine. In difficult years, if the quality does not meet the estate's uncompromising standards, no Château d'Yquem is produced at all—a decision that has been made several times throughout its history despite the enormous financial sacrifice.

Following fermentation in new French oak barrels, the wines spend approximately 30 months in barrel, emerging with an effortless integration of fruit, oak, acidity, and sweetness. Despite residual sugar levels that often exceed 130 grams per liter, Yquem never feels heavy. Instead, it achieves perhaps the greatest balancing act in wine: richness without weight.

In recent decades, under the stewardship of LVMH and with the leadership of talented technical teams including Pierre Lurton, Château d'Yquem has remained steadfast in its pursuit of perfection while introducing thoughtful innovations in vineyard management and cellar practices. The result is a continuity of style that links today's wines directly to the legendary bottles that have captivated collectors for centuries.

One of those innovations arrived in 2004 with Y, the estate's extraordinary dry white wine. Produced from the same vineyards that give birth to Château d'Yquem, Y is harvested before botrytis develops, capturing remarkable freshness, precision, and concentration. It has rapidly become one of Bordeaux's most sought-after dry whites, combining the richness of old-vine Sémillon with the energy and aromatic lift of Sauvignon Blanc.

Tonight's tasting offers a rare opportunity to explore both the dry and sweet expressions of this legendary estate while witnessing the remarkable evolution that only Château d'Yquem can deliver. From the youthful brilliance of Y to four decades of maturity in the grand vin, these wines illustrate why Yquem remains one of the greatest achievements in the history of wine.
