An Afternoon with Castello di Volpaia
Featuring Nicolò Mascheroni Stianti

Join us for a special afternoon with Nicolò Mascheroni Stianti, proprietor of Castello di Volpaia, one of the most historic and distinctive estates in Chianti Classico.

Perched high above the hills of Radda in Chianti, Volpaia is unlike almost any other estate in Tuscany. The medieval village sits at roughly 2,000 feet above sea level, with vineyards ranging from approximately 1,300 to more than 2,100 feet—among the highest elevations in Chianti Classico. The combination of altitude, cool microclimate, southern exposures, and predominantly sandstone Macigno Toscano soils gives Volpaia’s Sangiovese its signature combination of elegance, freshness, perfume, and longevity.

The story of Volpaia reaches back to 1172, when the first documents mention the fortified village. Its name is tied to the historic Florentine della Volpaia family, a family of artists, builders, and scientific instrument makers whose most famous member, Lorenzo della Volpaia, was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci.

The modern chapter began when Raffaello Stianti acquired Volpaia in the 1960s and ultimately gave the estate to his daughter Giovannella as a wedding gift when she married Carlo Mascheroni. Together, Carlo and Giovannella devoted their lives to restoring Volpaia—not simply as a winery, but as a living medieval village centered around wine, olive oil, agriculture, and hospitality. Today, their children Nicolò and Federica Mascheroni Stianti carry that legacy forward.

Much of Volpaia's winemaking takes place within the ancient village itself, with cellars ingeniously incorporated into historic buildings and walls. The estate farms organically and has dedicated decades to preserving and rediscovering traditional Sangiovese selections adapted to this extraordinary mountain terroir.

Join us for an afternoon with Nicolò as he takes us through the wines of Castello di Volpaia and shares the story of a family, a medieval village, and a remarkable piece of Chianti Classico history.
