Welcome to the "new" Old World — Central Europe. Did you know that people in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and other Central European countries have been making wine for thousands of years? Probably not. Wines from this area of Europe have been kept a secret for years, mostly because their production is so limited and because prior governments did not permit large-scale exportation. But make no mistake: Despite not being well-known in the U.S., winemakers in this part of Europe produce exceptional wines that can go toe-to-toe with their West European counterparts! And they do so often at a better quality-to-price ratio.
As things have changed in recent years, wines from this region are finally appearing in
the American market, much to our delight. It is exciting to introduce wine drinkers to new grapes and winemaking styles from this region.
All of the producers are organic and small, producing wines by hand without the aid of heavy machines.
